Pieter Breughel the Elder: The Triumph of Death

Reminiscent of the work of Hieronymus Bosch.  Both Breughel and Bosch developed their styles independent of the major styles of the 16th century.  What most artists did at that time was follow the work of 3 major Italian artists: Leonardo da Vinci, Michaelangelo and Raphael.

The Triumph of Death, Pieter Breughel

A skeleton on horseback in the middle of the painting leads the troups that lead people to hell. It also depicts the devastation of religious wars.  There is a skeleton with an hourglass.  A skeleton cutting the throat of a pilgrim. Breughal was referred to as the new Bosch.
