I wonder how people at the time thought of this painting by Botticelli of a naked Venus standing boldly in the centre of the canvas. So, the sacred Virgin Mary with her baby on her knee has been usurped by this blonde goddess.
Where would this painting have been seen? Not in a church I am sure. The Roman Gods are knuckling in into the space that was, since Byzantium, inhabited by sacred iconotypes.
Was it not in Rome that Christianity took form? I am not sure what is happening here in art. It is very confusing. Is this really a look back to a Greek/Roman antiquity? Or is something else going on : a battle between myth and religion?
