Edwin Smith at the RIBA, London

Vatican Gardens, Rome

We went to see the Edwin Smith exhibition at the RIBA.  It was a beautiful summery day, today, Edwin Smith is a long forgotten British photographer.  What a lovely exhibition. He knew how to use tone, light and was a consumate printer in the darkroom.

He lived in Camden, London and travelled around England: Newcastle, Oxford and was commissioned by Thames and Hudson to do series of photographs for their books about England, but I found these images a bit flat and ‘illustrative’ compared with his personal  work which was atmospheric.
